January 15, 2009 - Structure Fire - 6355 York Road (Flooring Outlaw)

     Go Back     > 2009     > January

The New Oxford Volunteers as well as numerous other Adams and York County fire departments responded to a Commercial Building Fire at the Flooring Outlaw, 6355 York Rd. in Berwick Township. at approximately 1730 hours on Thursday January 15th.

The Adams County 911 center reported receiving numerous calls from passing motorists advising of a very large fire to the rear of the building. Chief Rabine responded immediately after dispatch. Heavy Smoke was clearly visible for the Borough of New Oxford and requested a 2nd Alarm. Rabine arrived on the scene to confirm the 911 center's reports and struck a 3rd alarm for personnel due to the extreme temperatures and the need for additional water based on the building's fire load.

The entire building was filled with large carpet rolls and other types of flooring materials. A 5" supply line was layed from the Brethern Home (York Water) hydrant to the scene of the fire by multiple engine companies. The lay was approximately 3500'. A tanker shuttle was also in operation on the East Side of the fire with a fill site located Abbottstown Borough.

A second tanker shuttle operation was established along with a supply line to the rear of the structure on Kelly Drive to protect exposures and to extinguish the fire on the Delta side of building. Truck 13 and Quint 29 flowed copious amounts of water via their ladder pipes and numerous other Master Streams and handlines were in service as well.
